Building a boundary wall in the UAE — which blocks, what height, and what to order
A practical guide to boundary and compound walls in the UAE — block choice, height and reinforcement, plastering, and how to estimate what to order.
TL;DR — Most UAE boundary and compound walls are built in hollow concrete block with reinforced, grouted cores and piers at intervals, then plastered both sides. Use 6″ (150 mm) hollow for standard walls and 8″ (200 mm) where the wall is tall or exposed; build the piers and lower courses in solid block when height or vehicle impact demands it. Your structural consultant sets rebar size and pier spacing for the wind load and height — we supply the blocks to match.
Block choice: 6″ hollow (150 × 200 × 400 mm) is the common default — light, economical, and the cores take vertical rebar plus grout. Step up to 8″ hollow (200 × 200 × 400 mm) for taller or more exposed walls. Solid blocks go in the piers and bottom courses where you need extra density and pull-out strength, such as a gate post. Height and reinforcement: wall height drives everything. A low garden wall is simple; a 2–3 m compound wall needs grouted vertical bars in the cores at a spacing your engineer schedules, with piers and a capping or bond beam. Taller or wind-exposed walls need closer pier spacing. This is an engineering decision — get the rebar schedule from your structural consultant, then we match block type and quantity.
Plastering and finish: boundary walls are typically plastered both faces with cement render, then painted or textured. Keep mortar joints full at 10 mm and the courses true — consistent block dimensions, which is what we control in production, keep plaster thickness even and the wall straight.
What to order — estimate first: measure the wall face area (length × height), then about 12.5 blocks per square metre including waste, and add solid blocks for the piers and bottom courses.
