Plain-language definitions of the technical terms used for UAE-compliant masonry and lightweight concrete blocks — for specifiers, contractors and inspectors.

U-value: Heat transmission coefficient of a complete wall assembly. Lower is better. Dubai Al Safat Silver mandates ≤ 0.57 W/m²·K for external walls; Estidama Pearl 1 expects similar performance.
Thermal conductivity (λ): Material-level conductivity, independent of wall thickness. λ₁₀ is measured at 10 °C reference temperature and a low moisture content.
Compressive strength (f_c): Average failure stress of a cured block in axial compression. UAE Civil Defence requires ≥ 7.5 N/mm² for load-bearing solid blocks.
Block density: Mass per cubic metre of the cured block. Lightweight blocks come in at 850–1300 kg/m³ versus 2200 kg/m³ for normal-weight concrete — the lower mass is what reduces dead load and cooling demand.
Fire-resistance rating: Time a wall assembly maintains structural integrity, insulation and gas-tightness in the standard furnace test. UAE Civil Defence accepts ratings expressed in hours per BS 476-22 or EN 1364.
Estidama Pearl: Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council's sustainability rating. New buildings in Abu Dhabi must hit Pearl 1; government buildings target Pearl 2. Lightweight insulated blocks contribute thermal envelope credits.
Al Sa'fat: Dubai's green building rating. Bronze is the minimum for all new buildings; Silver and Gold are voluntary. Lightweight insulated blocks help meet the external-wall U-value requirements.
Type Approval (TAS): Material approval issued by Dubai Municipality and equivalent regional authorities — required before a block can be specified in a public-tender project.
Pallet: Standard timber base for stacking and shipping blocks. Tiger Stone uses 1.0 × 1.2 m pallets — typically holding 60–120 blocks depending on SKU.
Truckload: A full standard 12-m flatbed dispatched from the factory carries roughly 32 pallets, depending on SKU mass. Smaller emirates can be served with two trucks per day.
