Concrete block vs red brick vs AAC — choosing your walling material in the UAE
How concrete blocks, red brick and AAC compare for UAE construction — cost, structure, thermal performance, and where each makes sense.
TL;DR — In the UAE, concrete block is the workhorse for most structural and boundary walls — strong, available and economical. AAC (autoclaved aerated concrete) is lighter with better raw thermal conductivity, suited to lightweight partitions and some external skins. Red brick is used more for cladding and aesthetic facing. For most walls a concrete hollow block — or an insulated block on external walls — is the pragmatic choice; AAC competes where weight and thermal are the priority and structural demand is lower.
Concrete block — strengths: high compressive capacity in the structural shells, cores for reinforced masonry, a wide size range (4″ to 10″), and the lowest cost-per-performance for load-bearing and boundary walls. For external heat, the insulated block (EPS core) addresses thermal performance without leaving the concrete-block family. See /blog/concrete-block-sizes-uae.
AAC — strengths and trade-offs: lighter to handle and better raw thermal conductivity, which suits non-load-bearing partitions and some external infill. Trade-offs: lower point-load and fixing strength than a solid concrete section, and it usually carries a price premium over plain hollow block. We compare the external-wall case in detail in /blog/insulated-vs-aac-blocks-uae.
Red brick — where it fits: mainly cladding, aesthetic facing, feature walls and some partitions. It is not the default structural choice for UAE compound and boundary walls, where reinforced concrete block is standard.
How to decide: load-bearing or boundary wall → concrete block (hollow plus solid where needed). External wall where summer heat is the priority → insulated concrete block, or AAC if weight and thermal outweigh structural demand and budget. Cladding or feature → brick. Most UAE projects end up mostly concrete block, with the right size per wall.
